Family Planning: NURHI Embarks On Modification Of Private Hospitals

Leadership Nigeria News Today

In a bid to encourage more Nigerians to embrace family planning, an international organisation, NURHI, has expanded the 72 modified makeover of family planning unit to private health facilities in Lagos state. Team Leader, Post Pregnancy Family Planning Project, Dr Taiwo Johnson, at the commissioning of family planning unit in Dafe Medical Centre, Lagos state said the 72 modified makeover of private hospitals was to ensure that family planning is provided along with national standard and at a cheaper rate. Johnson said NURHI is working with 40 private health facilities for this first year. She said, “We have renovated 19 presently, the second batch which is the 21 facilities will start in September 2018. We also plan to expand it to over 200. Some of the private facilities have given the organization a room, which will be called the family planning room. “We are doing this because private sector is very key if we must achieve the set goal of family planning. About 65 per cent of Lagosians patronize the private sector. “Though, they are profit driven sector and they are not like the public sector, but majority of Nigerians use them. We are planning to train the staff to meet demands of clients. So, as women are coming in, we want to ensure that there is a provider that has been trained to provide quality services. “We have also recruited mobilization consultants that will go into these communities where the private hospitals are present, talk to women about family planning, bring them to the facilities to access family planning,” she added.

In his reaction, the managing director, Dafe Medical Centre, Dr. Odjegoro Ofaye said, “This is a very good gesture from NURHI and we applaud them for doing this. They have not only selected us to provide quality family planning services to people living in this community, but they have also equipped the room for us. We are very grateful.
“The only way we can repay them is to use the centre for the purpose it is met for. We are going to provide quality family planning services to people in this community at an affordable price, a price that is pocket friendly, so as to attract them to my facility.”
