Fake Fertilizer In Circulation, Producers Alert FG

Worried about the circulation of fake fertilizer in the country, the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN) on Friday, called on the federal government to intervene without further delay.

The executive secretary of the association, Ahmed Rabiu Kwa, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone chat in Lagos that the adulterated fertilizer has since begun to lower the yield of farm produce. According to Kwa, unlike the original which contains grain like particles and other ingredients visible to the eyes, the fake one is smooth in texture, dusty, and obviously mixed with sand. He insisted that the government must act immediately to curb the situation.

“The federal government should urgently arrest this development which could derail her plans to produce one million metric tonnes of fertilizer in 2018, he said.’’

“In 2017 after the launch of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) about 500,000 metric tonnes of NPK fertilizer was produced. The initiative was a superb one by the president because it went smoothly and the yield was high. But the manufacturers of fake fertilizer are now everywhere and trying to retard the efforts of the government and this association. This can make a mess of the success made so far in the sector,” he concluded.
