The 9th edition of the Lagos Art Auction took place last week at the Terra Kulture Mydrim Gallery Auction TKMG in Lagos as guests in attendance included art collectors, artists and art lovers.
After a successful collectors’ preview recently held as collectors viewed and cherished some of the pieces to be auctioned. Different art designs particularly one named SUBLIMITY by John Ogbeta. Mr Ogbeta, a graduate of Fine Arts from Auchi Polyrechnic, Edo State, created an intricate design of mixed media on Plywood which showed different messages particularly that of the essence of womanhood. Speaking on the design, John noted that this was the second time his works would be on display by Terra Kulture M G.
Other works like Egudu-Jera & His Danger Pen by Mufu Onifade espouses the work of a pen pusher- journalist. The 2016 design was on an Acrylic on Canvas and it shows how talented Nigerians are and the need for more support from corporate bodies and government. Dance To Enchanting Songs, a six-foot etched work by the erudite Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya attracted onlookers as the beauty and intricacy was seen by all. And the pricing which is from thirteen million Naira also evoked curiosity.
Speaking on the Auction, Curator at Terra Kulture Art Gallery, Ugonna Ibe-Ejiogu stated, “We are grateful to the artists and buyers that support us and enable us to see such great results. While the sales of works by established artists was inevitable, the auction also saw sales by lesser known names which is encouraging for emerging artists and the growth of the West African Art market”.
The top sale of the evening included an untitled piece by Ablade Glover, an oil on canvas from 1992. Other leading sales of the evening included David Dale’s Agidigbo, a glass beads on board from 2013, Abiodun Olaku’s Delta Symphony (2016), Kolade Oshinowo’sMother and Child (1975), and Segun Aiyesan’s Rachael (2018).
