The prevalence of HIV/AIDS across Katsina State has dropped to 0.7 per cent from 2.3 per cent, the executive secretary of the State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA), Dr. Muntari Hassan Kankia, has said.
Kankia, who made this known yesterday during the distribution of food items to 29 HIV/AIDS patient associations in the state, noted that the gesture is to offer care and support to HIV patients in need of nutritious food due to the nature of their drugs.
He said the state boasts of no fewer than 109 HIV status-testing centres with 80 centres for women who contract the disease and 19 centres where drugs for HIV/AIDS patients are being provided.
The SACA boss, who decried the withdrawal of assistance to HIV patients from the World Bank in the past three years, poured encomium on the state government for taking over the provision of the drugs.
He also expressed happiness over the supply of HIV testing equipment worth over N8million to the agency by the federal government.
In her remarks, the wife of the state governor, Hajiya Hadiza Aminu Bello Masari, commended the agency, state and federal governments’ commitment to the HIV patients and urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the foodstuff.
The state chairman of HIV/AIDS Patient Associations, Mallam Shehu, expressed appreciation to the agency and other stakeholders for the assistance aimed at improving their welfare.
