Crisis is brewing in the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), as Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter on Wednesday passed a vote of ‘No Confidence’ on the Honour Sirawo-led National Executive Committee, NEC for failing in his duties to lead the association with efficiency and defend the statute under which he was elected.
This was part of the five-point communiqué issued at the end of its emergency congress held at the National Stadium, Abuja.
The Chapter called on the FCT Council and the National Secretariat of NUJ to forthwith withdraw the registration of SWAN with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as a corporate entity, saying it contravenes the NUJ constitution.
The congress frowned at the alleged plan by the Sirawo-led NEC of SWAN to remove the body from NUJ, which has not been officially denounced by the National body.
“We are affiliates of the NUJ and remain so. Incorporation of an NGO without due consultation with members nationwide is not acceptable. We are a beat association established under the law that established NUJ and shall remain so,” the communiqué read in part.
The chapter also among other things lamented about the proliferation of non-practising Sports Writers into SWAN NEC, saying it violates the statutes of the association and decried the organised and forceful resignation of elected members of NEC and attempts to replace them with non-elected members.
