ACI Commences Safety Inspection Of Abuja Airport
A team from the Airport Council International (ACI) has commenced security and safety inspections of facilities and equipment at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja to access its level of compliance to international best practices in terms of security.
The six team member, led by Brahim Lakhlili of the Airport Excellence (APEX), an arm of Airport Council International (ACI) began the inspection yesterday, and would inspect the airside, apron, tarmac and the perimeter fences of the airport to know its level of compliance
The team, which just concluded the inspection of the the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos last week, is expected conclude its inspection within one week after which, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN would determine where next to inspect.
Speaking with the media on the reason for the inspection, Lakhlili said it was a routine check which the Council embarks on from time to time and from country to country.
He further clarified on that the inspection was not to find faults or condem the security and safety situations at the airport but to improve on whatever is on ground as there can never be too careful in security issues.
While also speaking, the operational manager, North central and the Abuja airport manager, Mahmud Sani said after the certification of the airport by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority in November, 2018, we decide to follow up and ensure that we remain aflot and hence the visit by the ACI.
He further explained that the inspection is a regular thing and the team will be given the chance to inspect every part of the airport as it was the initiative of FAAN to invite them and find a way of working together to better Nigeria aviation.
While explaining that there was no cause for alarm in terms of security, the airport manager said the exercise is more of assessment in line with international best practices and noted that the team was not only at the airport for correction, but about assistance where necessary to the airport and FAAN, stressing that the team would also look at the agency’s facilities manpower at various locations, perimeter fences and others that had to do with security and ways to improve on them.
