The Adamawa State government has cautioned residents on the banks of River Benue and its fringes, to relocate to the hinterlands, ahead of the anticipated flooding from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon Republic.
Governor Muhammadu Bindow, expressed concern over the rising water level in the state as a result of the opening of the spillway of Lagdo Dam.
The governor in a statement by the commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, said the warning became necessary, to avert the 2012 incident.
“Government observes the rising tide of the Benue River across the state, as well as the increasing submergence of houses and farmlands along river banks. A response team, involving all stakeholders, in disaster management, has been constituted to ensure prompt response. Government is mindful of our responsibilities, to protect lives and property under all circumstances.
“Fufore, Yola-South, Yola North, Girei,Demsa, Numan, Lamurde, Shelleng Guyuk and Song local government areas, are likely to be affected by the flood in the state”, he said.
It would be recalled that, property worth millions of naira were lost in 2012, as a result of indiscriminate release of water from the Lagdo Dam by the Cameroonian authorities in the state.
