INEC Budget Delay: Observer Groups Set For Nationwide Protest

Published

In line with repeated calls for the passage of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s budget for the 2019 elections by the National Assembly, observer groups, Election Monitor and  The Movement for Transparent Elections are set to begin a nationwide protest tomorrow to demand reasons for the delay as elections draw near.

Election Monitor said it had earlier issued two press statements shedding light on the implications of delaying the budget passage of the 2019 Nigerian general elections.

Convener of Election Monitor, Abiodun Ajijola in a statement on behalf of the groups said it is unfortunate and completely unacceptable that the National Assembly even after the delay, is considering postponing its resumption till the second week in October 2018.

According to him,  “Election Monitor and The Movement for Transparent Elections are acutely concerned alongside many Nigerians that the budget for the general elections is yet to be passed despite the fact that the request for it was submitted two months ago.

“Since the elections kicked off on August 17, 2018, why is the National Assembly not considering the budget for the security agencies as well?

“Election Monitor wants to remind all members of the National Assembly that they were elected to serve in the best interest of Nigerians.

INEC has an approved Election Project Plan (EPP) which guides it in effective election implementation.”

The groups called on all well-meaning Nigerians to come out for a peaceful march to the National Assembly to demand that the 2019 General elections budget is passed on or before the September 18, 2018.”

It warned that further delay in passing and releasing the 2019 Elections budget, would forced the group to sustain nationwide daily protests until the whole election budget is passed and released to INEC.
