New Islamic Year: Niger Gov, IBB Harp On Peace, Unity

As Muslims in Nigeria mark New Islamic Year, former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) and Niger State governor, Abubakar Sani Bello have urged Muslims to always work for peace using lessons from the new months in Islamic history.

IBB said the new Islamic year is significantly symbolic to the entire Muslim Community all over the world and as such the teachings of Islam in maintaining peace, tranquility, equality and respect to the constituted authorities should be adhered to with the fear of God.

According to the former military president,  “The migration of the Prophet of Islam Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) and the commencement of Islamic Lunar year have emboldened mankind with sufficient courage and endurance to address difficulties in whatever situations they found themselves.”

General Babangida appealed to Nigerians to renew their faith in Allah and deepen their patriotism to their nation saying, “I  enjoined Nigerians to use the lessons derived from Hijrah to surmount Nigeria’s problems for a better country of our dream in Peace, Unity and Prosperity”.

Similarly, Niger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani-Bello has congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of New Islamic Calendar with a call on them to be focused and live a consecrated life in line with the doctrines and teachings of Islam.

The governor, in a statement by his chief press secretary, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace urged Muslims across the country to remain focused and ensure they live a sacred life as pilgrims here on earth.

He called on the people to work towards building a future for Nigeria that would be hinged on tolerance, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.

“I also urge you to be patriotic, peaceful and tolerant in all your dealings and work together in peace and harmony for the betterment of our dear country.”

Governor Sani-Bello also enjoined Muslims to make use of the blessings associated with the commencement of a new year to pray for the country and its leaders, adding that “the prayers and goodwill of the people is an important ingredient to achieving the country’s overall development”.

He further appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the current administration as it works towards improving the people’s standard of living, adding that the administration, in its own capacity is working towards ensuring a better economy and stable society driven by people-centred governance.
