Hit And Run ; Driver Escapes Jail After Abandoning Victim

Leadership Nigeria News Today

A driver has escaped jail time over a hit-and-run at Bankstown in Sydney’s west that left an elderly man with a fractured skull.

Bilal Hassan panicked and took-off because he thought he killed 88-year-old Augusto Benitez, who was crossing at the corner of Eldridge Street and Northam Avenue with his walking frame in March.

Security cameras captured the horrific accident.

The elderly man, who has dementia, bounced off the bonnet and was left for dead, lying in the middle of the road.

A magistrate scolded Hassan for leaving the scene and taking almost 24 hours to hand himself in.

Elaine Truscott warned the 25-year-old “if he is lucky to be an old man one day, he will hope drivers slow down for him”.

She said he’ll forever have to live with the consequences of what he did that night, along with the man who he hit.

Hassan’s lawyer Fadi Abbas told the court there were no winners in this case and that his client wishes to meet with Mr Benitez to express his remorse and assist him in any way possible.

Mr Benitez has recovered from the accident, but has since been placed in an aged-care facility.

He is originally from Chile and has no family in Australia.

Hassan has been placed on a two-year good behaviour bond.

The 25-year-old has also been fined $3500 and lost his driver’s licence for 18 months.
