Gunmen Attack Passenger Bus, Kill Driver In A/Ibom




Gunmen suspected to be  militants on Tuesday shot dead a middle aged  commercial driver  and dispossessed several passengers of their belongings in  Ukanafun local government area of  Akwa Ibom State

The incident occurred at about 5am in the morning at Ikot Anem along Ukanafun- Ekparakwa highway .

It was learnt that the gunmen, fired several shots at the bus conveying some market women, seven of them to Ibeno to buy fish.

An eyewitness who did not disclosed his identity told our correspondent that the gunmen numbering about four emerged from the bush and stopped them along the road and ordered the driver a native of Nkek out of the bus.

The driver known as Enyak Benzon  according to the sources was shot at close range when he tried to struggle the control of the bus with the gunmen.

“We were traveling to buy fish at Ibeno but at a point on the highway we were stopped by the gunmen who asked us to keep quiet as they went for the driver of the bus.

“We just hear gunshots and immediately they came and collected our phones and cash before they    disappeared into the bush,” the eyewitness said.

When contacted, the state police public relations officer (PPRO) DSP Odiko Macdon  said that he was yet to be  briefed about the incident.

Governor Emmanuel had few days ago during the monthly prayer meeting at the Government House Chapel  in Uyo told the people of the state that relative calm have now returned to Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo the two local government areas of the state that has been under siege of bandits and kidnappers.
