IPC Charges Journalists On Sensitive Election Reportage



Ahead of the 2019 general election, the director of International Press Center (IPC), Lagos, Mr Lanre Arogundade has charged journalist to ensure fair Reportage and unbiased coverage in order to avoid creating tension.

Arogundade who spoke during the two day workshop tagged, “Conflict Sensitive reporting for online Ahead 2019 Election for journalists and bloggers in Abuja said it is feared that in the realm of politics, violent conflict during elections could occur if online journalism practitioners and bloggers refuse to embrace conflict sensitive principles.

“The emerging consensus therefore is that online journalists and bloggers need to strive to do better so they could be part of efforts that seek to remove hate narratives from political communication as a way of making the electoral environment healthier.”

The workshop which attracted about 30 online journalists/bloggers from FCT as well as Northern, South-Eastern and South-South States, is with the overall objectives to deepen the role of the media (conventional and new/social) in promoting credible electoral processes, inclusivity and accountable democratic practices and service delivery was deemed necessary because the online environment now occupies a very central place in media operations.

He further commended the European Union whose support has made it possible through Component 4b: Support to the Media for Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) project.

Also speaking, Dr Ruqayyah Yusuf of the department of information and media studies, Bayero University Kano, Said on-line reporters can contribute to curtailing Conflict by avoiding hate speech and fake news among others.
