Osun Guber: INEC Confirms Arrest Of 1 Over Vote Buying Attempts

…… As Thugs Fight Over Politician Largesse In Osogbo.


Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, the Resident Electoral Commissioner(REC) in Osun has confirmed the arrest of one person by security agencies in Iwo Local Government Area of the over attempt vote buying during the ongoing governorship election.

Agbaje who confirmed the development to our correspondent through a phone call,said the suspect was arrested with about N600,000 and had been handed over to the police.

The REC said, “At Iwo, we got a report that security agencies arrested someone with about N600,000 cash near their polling unit. It was earlier this morning. The person was arrested and he is already with the police.

“I would not know the party he belongs. We are not interested in any party, we are interested that somebody came there, that is why the police are investigating. The person is already with the police.

“We said it that people should not bring money near a polling station. Anybody that does that, would be arrested.

Meanwhile, some party supporters and thugs at unit 003 Ward 1 Ataoja ‘A’ in Osogbo, engaged in a physical brawl over the money allegedly ‘dropped’ by one of the notable politician in the area.

The politician who said to be a senatorial aspirant, was passing by the unit with armed security escort when the political thugs thronged around his convoy demanding for money.

Thugs engaged themselves in a serious fight as they struggled to be in control of what was “dropped” by the politician.

Some of the voters around the voting unit blamed the politician for moving around with armed security men on election day when electoral law forbids such movement.


Police Arrests Two Over False Name Compilations 

Police have reportedly arrested two people in connection with a compiled list of names and significant amount of money at Ward 11 Unit 14 of Osogbo Local Government area, Osogbo.

One of the suspect was simply identified as Ay.

The Nigerian Police Force sprang into action when the suspicious movements of the two were noticed.

They were immediately apprehended after a thorough check.

These two offenders were seen handcuffed and taken off the scene of the crime by our correspondent.

However, speaking on the conduct of the election, Senator Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, a stalwart of PDP in Ayedaade local government expressed satisfaction with INEC preparedness for the election.

Speaking in Ode-Omu, the former Minister for Youth and Sports described Osun electorate as mature saying despite political diversity, their was no reported case of violence anywhere in his domain.

Alao speaking, former Minister of Police Affairs, Mr Jelili Adesiyan commended security agents for their civil conduct adding that Osun electorate’s conduct deserves commendation.

Osun Poll: Voting Ends, Counting Begins


Voting has ended in the ongoing Osun State governorship election holding across the thirty local government area of the state .

The exercise which commenced at 8.00 am ended at 2.00 pm in most of the polling visited by our correspondent in Osogbo without any hitch.

All the eligible voters on the queue in every polling units visited had voted and sorting of the votes had just commenced.

However, INEC and the police had put measures in place to check vote buying at the elections by banning the use of phones at the voting cubicle and discouraging the sharing of money around the voting centres.

But some parties have found ways to beat the rule. Agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) are reported to have distributed money and some items, days before the election.

Some agents suspected to be working for the PDP on Friday was said to have shared N1000 to those who could show their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) at several units and wards in Ikire.

While some people allegedly got money, others reportedly got 10kg bag of rice. And still, some people got extra cash and extra rice.

Agents of the APC were also reported to have distributed N500 to prospective voters on Wednesday.

It was also learnt that at Olorunsogo Community – Oke-Awere, Owode Ede, some party agents shared out N500 each to artisans, bike riders and market women.

At Ile-Ife, the home town of the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party SDP, Senator Iyiola Omisore the election was peaceful and calm as many people came up to exercise their civic responsibility.

At Ilare ward 4 where the deputy governor candidate of the PDP, Barrister Albert Abiodun Adeogo, a middle age man was allegedly arrested the officials of Department of Security Services DSS.

He was whisked away to the headquarters of the service’s for further investigation.

Speaking, the PDP deputy governor candidates said it was too early to judge the conduct of the election.

He accused the security operatives of monitoring the voting pattern of the voters while the INEC officials refused to call them to order.

As a result, he alleged that both INEC officials and the security operatives might have compromised.

One of the observers from the Women Arise for Change Initiative, Comrade Rasaq Oladosu who commended for prompt early distribution of voting materials and the exercise commenced in time.

He noted that there was high turn out of voters in Ife in general, adding that INEC had been up and doing.

“Contrary to past elections, there is no shortage of voting materials and there is no cause for complaint.

“Also, on security, there is no intimidation and harassment of voters. It is very peaceful,” he declared.

Vote Begins In Some Osogbo Units

Vote counting has started in some units in Ikire while voting is still on in others.

This is in line with INEC regulation that voting should continue so long as a voter is on the queue before the 2pm cut off time.

Police Nabs Two Agents Over Attempted Vote-buying 

Two agents alleged to be that of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have been arrested by the Nigeria police for allegedly attempting to buy votes in the ongoing Osun state governorship election.

Reports say the agents had attempted to distribute money to voters at the Obada area of Ede in Ede local government area, where PDP’s candidate, Ademola Adeleke, is from.

Adeleke is contesting alongside the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) candidate, Isiaka Oyetola; Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party, Fatai Akinbade of the African Democratic Congress, and Adeoti Moshood of Action Democratic Party.
