Most Reverend Mathew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese is expected to deliver the lecture to commemorate the 2018 Oyemekun/Ulefunta Festival slated for Wednesday,September 5, 2018 in Akure, Ondo state.
Kukah, a social critic and renowned orator will be joined by Pa Olu Falae, an ex-Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) alongside Kola Omotosho, a Professor of History.
Prof. Abiodun Ayodele, Chairman of the Lecture Committee of Ulefunta Festival made the disclosure in a statement signed and issued to journalists at the weekend and also obtained by LEADERSHIP.
Ayodele, who is also the Head in the Department of Botany, University of Ibadan said the lecture would take place at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
He disclosed that the public lecture has been fixed for Francis Ibiyemi Auditorium inside the University’s campus and would be attended by academia, students/youths, sons and daughters of Akure kingdom.
Prof. Ayodele while explaining the details behind the christening of the Ulefunta Festival, noted that Akure Kingdom before now celebrated a yearly festival called Oyemekun.
“But this year, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Oguntoyinbo, Odundun II and his Council of Chiefs decided to take the festival a notch higher.
“And the agreement is to celebrate some portions of Akure’s cultural pasts (memories) that are worthy of being brought into modern remembrance.
“One of these is the traditional period of leave of the Akure king called Ulefunta.The Deji decided to celebrate it and impart its lessons on the modern world.
“Thus, this year’s celebration is tagged:Oyemekun/Ulefunta 2018 Festival and one of its highlights is a public lecture,” he said.
The Chairman of the Festival Committee further said that “the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),Chief Olu Falae, will be the Chairman of the lecture, while renowned literary icon and actor, Professor Kole Omotoso will be moderator of the lecture”.
According to him, vice chancellor of FUTA, Professor Joseph Adeola Fuwape would be the Chief Host of the event during the public lecture and is expected to be joined by the members of the institution.
He, however, added that members of the academia, the Deji of Akure, as well as other monarchs and chiefs and the Catholic Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Most Reverend Jude Arogundade will be in attendance.
