In a bid to improve grassroots sports development, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung has advocated for schools’ sports development in Nigeria.
Dalung made the call during the official launch of the Nigeria Sports Book of Record from 1884- 2017 and the Hall of Fame at the Exhibition Pavilion Event Centre, Abuja, yesterday.
The sports minister mentioned that school sports was the foundation of the glorious years that Nigeria had enjoyed in terms of sport achievements and also expressed his discontent in which sports in schools have been relegated to the background.
“School sports was the foundation of the glorious years of sports in Nigeria. We’ve gotten to a point where physical education was eliminated in our school as if that was not enough, we went into an education architecture which creates room for people to covert private buildings into school”, he opined.
However, the minister disclosed that the ministry of sports is working together with the ministry of education to reintroduce schools sports in the country.
“There is a synergy between the sports ministry and the ministry of Education compelling the reintroduction of school sports and physical education, because that is the foundation of sports development and we cannot do without it,” he concluded.
