No fewer than 2,226 athletes will vie for 290 medals on offer at the forthcoming 2nd Ministry of Interior Games tagged: ‘MIGA 2018’scheduled to hold between November 22 and December 1. The minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) disclosed this while unveiling the official Logo and Mascot of the Games on Tuesday in Abuja, urging all the service agencies and other stakeholders to use the games to encourage mass participation in sports to sustain the physical and mental fitness of the services personnel.
The Games will be held in Kaduna state with the main ministry, Nigeria police, Nigeria prisons, Nigeria Immigration services, Federal Fire Services and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as participants.
The minister, who spoke at the unveiling ceremony, said President Muhammadu Buhari will declare the Games open, while vice president Yemi Osinbajo will declare the games closed on December 1, 2018.
He said the biannual championship was put together to foster intra and inter-services relationship and reinforce the relationship between personnel of the services and the civil servants in the main ministry.
“The objectives of the games are to identify and select athletes that would represent the Services/Ministry at the national and international competitions, project the Services /Ministry as major contributions to sports development in the country and enhance personal welfare and bridge communication gap with the leadership of the services.
“The athletes will compete in about 13 sports, comprising athletics, badminton, basketball, football, volleyball, handball, squash, swimming, table tennis, tug-of-war, taekwondo, tennis and karate.
“The number of participants will be about 2,226 athletes. While competition venue includes Ahmadu Bello stadium and Murtala Mohammed Square, the accommodation venues for the participants are Police College, Kaduna Polytechnic, Prisons staff College,” he said.
Speaking earlier, permanent secretary of Federal Ministry of Interior, Dr. Mohammed Bello Umar said the host city, Kaduna has gained appreciable peace after the recent civil unrest in the state, urging all stakeholders concerned to support the games to ensure its success and realization of its objectives.
He said the host state governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, has assured that the state will host a spectacular MIGA Games and promised to make available for use all its facilities.
Chairman of the Main Organising Committtee (MOC), Mallam Yakmut expressed appreciation to the Minister and Permanent Secretary for the trust reposed on him and pledged his committee readiness to execute much improved MIGA event.
A total of 1,410 athletes, 156 team officials, 24 federation officials, 155 technical officials, 126 security personnel, 45 medical personnel, 60 media personnel and 80 volunteers are expected to take part in the Games.
