A Daura Road Magistrates’ Court, Kaduna, on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old trader, Okwube Abboy, to 2 years imprisonment for stealing 500 pieces of printing plates.

The magistrate, Mrs Zainab Mohammed, said that since the defendant had pleaded guilty to the charge, the court had no option than to sentence him accordingly.

She, however, gave the convict an option of N100,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crimes after serving his prison term.

Mohammed also ordered the convict to pay N300, 000 as compensation to the complainant.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abboy, of Zonkwa Road Narayi Kaduna, was sentenced on a two-count charge of mischief and theft.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Baba, had informed the court that on Nov. 2, Dahiru Umar of Lokoja Road, Kaduna, reported the matter at Sabon Gari Police Station.

Baba told the court that on the same date, at about 8.00 a.m. the complainant came to his shop and discovered that his printing plates about 500 pieces valued at N300,000 were stolen by the convict.

The prosecutor said that the complainant reported the incident for proper investigation at the police station which led to the arrest of the convict.

Baba further stated that during investigation, 449 pieces of the plates were recovered from the convict, while 311 were damaged.

He noted that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 313 and 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.(NAN)
