Niger Records 516 Road Crashes, 197 Deaths

The Niger State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded 516 road traffic crashes and 197 deaths in one year in the state.

The sector commander, Mr. Joel Ishaya Dagwa, told a news conference yesterday in Minna, the state capital at an event to mark the World Day for Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims tagged: “Roads have stories”.

He said that the occasion followed a resolution by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness among people to be conscious of the danger of road traffic crashes.

According to him, “based on the information available to FRSC, a total of 9,383 crashes were recorded with 2,587 being fatal and 5,121 people killed, Niger State accounted for 516 crashes and 197 deaths.”

Dagwa named the outlets with highest record of accidents and deaths as the Abuja-Kaduna, Mokwa-jebba and Mokwa-Tegina-Birnin Gwari highways and appealed to road users to appreciate the gravity attached to using the hihways.

He said that to mark the occasion, FRSC has decided to engage various transport unions, visit hospitals to encourage road traffic victims as well as advocacy visit to schools .
