of the Rosary Secondary School Gboko and finally to Caritas University, Amorji Nike, Enugu State. The Mass Communications graduate, turned fashion designer also holds a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. She is the founder of Sewnia Fashion House.
I am Sonia Doom Vaaswem from Benue State. I was born into the family of Mr Aondoaver Ephraim Vaaswem and Mrs Silvia Ngorumun Vaaswem on the 23rd September, 1992 at Mkar, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State. I am the second of two children. I started my educational career at First Baptist Nursery/Primary School Makurdi from there to Queen of the Rosary Secondary School Gboko then I proceeded to Caritas University Amorji Nike Enugu State where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. I went further for a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. I own the brand name Sewnia Fashion House and it focuses on meeting customers’ needs timely, precisely and efficiently as hard work and efficiency are our watch word.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
I felt the need to be self-reliant. So I enrolled for a Fashion and Design class in January 2016 with financial assistance from my parents and by June of the same year I graduated.
WHO TAUGHT YOU
I learnt from Katerah Institute of Fashion and Design in Benue State. And I can confidently say they are the best.
Catherine Omokoah Omoerah is my mentor in the fashion business. She is the Creative Director of Katerah Couture, she is creative, innovative, hardworking and also a God fearing woman.
My love for fashion and style prompted me to equip myself with the skill. In the past, I always had issues with tailors not meeting delivery dates or being unable to make the exact style I requested and after wasting time and money I decided to learn the fashion and design business and its been without regrets ever since as my love for all things fashion inspires me daily.
My fear is not being able to achieve my goals in life as I work daily to perfect my skill by watching online videos and being creative.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM COMPETITORS?
I put in time to do a neat job and also recommend styles that are likely to fit the body type of clients. Most times they end up requesting styles I suggest instead of what they wanted initially. I update myself with latest designs, materials, fabrics and new ways to achieve certain styles. I make readymade dresses which are available for people who appreciate good work and quality. At Sewnia Fashion House we are strictly about quality.
WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?
I am not where I want to be right now but I am moving forward and will definitely get there as the dream keeps growing. There have been disappointments along the way but I choose to move closer to achieving my set goals. My dream is a priority bigger than any setback.
I am presently working on getting a place for my business as I work from home. I see myself being celebrated as an international Fashion designer with crème de la crème of the society rocking my designs. I believe with time, I will get value for work and not the usual underpricing I get from some clients.
Being self-employed is an achievement for a young lady like me. I am able to cater for some needs and help out with one or two things at home. I have taught people who have graduated and are doing well in just this few years of venturing into the fashion world. Presently, I have students and it can only get better. I get to enjoy referrals from friends who wear my designs, I am also into cakes and small chops.
I have faced series of challenges which range from customers underpricing my work to convincing others to believe in me and my services.
The fact that young women out there are into one form of business or the other is enough motivation to move with the bandwagon to avoid being left behind. God has been my strength through it all because it takes determination and focus to be where I am and where I will be someday.
SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS
It has been God and a supportive family who believe in the growth of the girl-child.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE PROFESSION, BUSINESS AND FAMILY?
Being the only female child in the family has not made it easy because I am saddled with so many responsibilities but with adequate planning and God’s grace, I am able to handle all.
MOST MEMORABLE DAY
The first day I made a piece of clothing, a knee length pencil skirt was an exciting day as I could not believe I was wearing something I made. There is a saying ‘don’t do it except you love doing it’. I live to sew and the joy I feel after completing a dress is out of this world.
I love to bake and prepare all kinds of food. I also love to read books.
Women, especially northern women should never give up on their dreams as they alone can make it a reality. Pay no attention to people who think otherwise, aim high though it may seem impossible but with hard work, determination, prayers and God’s grace success is certain.
