The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has unveiled four international standards on human resource management for Nigeria.
Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the director- general of SON, Osita Aboloma, who disclosed that the standards were being introduced in Nigeria for the first time, said
the launch became necessary as the growth of globalisation, needs for unified direction, basis for benchmarking of practice, inclusive and unified standards of practice, clear ownership and accountability of human resource processes and compliance with relevant laws, among others were critical issues in human resource management that needed to be addressed in a structured manner.
The standards are Vocabulary in Human Resource Management (ISO 30400:2016), Guidelines on Recruitment in Human Resource Management (ISO 30405:2016), Guidelines in Governance in Resource Management (ISO 30408:2016) and Workforce Planning in Human Resource Management (ISO 30409:2016).
Aboloma said the new standards would go a long way to aiding the standardisation of skills being used in Nigeria as well as those exported out of the country.
Moreso, he argued that with these standards in place now, only quality workers would be recruited to work in organisations, adding that going forward, issues of recruitment would be solely handled by professionals to avoid such incidents as the case of the botched Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment which led to loss of lives.
While noting that twelve standards had been published globally by the International Organisation for Standards with another eight under development, Aboloma expressed the hope that the four standards, if implemented, would have the potential to add value to organisations and businesses by getting the human capital contribution right.
