Operation Safe Conduct, A Timely Idea

Published

on

The proposed operation safe conduct planned to be introduced for the forthcoming general elections by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen T.Y. Buratai is a welcome and commendable innovation. It is vintage Gen. Buratai.

Gen. Buratai’s idea of engaging his soldiers to work hand in hand with other security operatives and colleagues for the purpose of enhancing proper security surveillance during the coming elections is a welcome decision . Knowing what often happens or transpires during such elections Gen. Buratai’s innovative idea could not have come at a better time than now.

We are all aware that such operational initiatives introduced in the past by the General like Operation Damisa, Operation Lafia Dole, Operation Python Dance, Operation Crocodile Smile, Operation Zaman Lafia, Operation  Safe Haven etc have greatly helped in combatting terrorism and dangerous as well as unwarranted activities of criminally minded elements in Zamfara, Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, Taraba, Kogi, Niger Delta areas and such other volatile areas within the country.

Meanwhile the assurance given to the soldiers yesterday by President Muhammadu Buhari that the government is concerned about their welfare and the provision of sophisticated weaponry is a welcome development which should spur them into doing more in the protection of the country’s territorial integrity. Buhari had told them at their annual conference that the nation is with them especially now that the country is more than before facing acute security challenges.

It will be recalled that Gen. Buratai had also while speaking at the opening of the three-day  conference that the soldiers were determined more than ever before to their assignments adding that new strategies had been adopted to  improve and enhance the security of the nation especially as the country was approaching another election period.

I cannot agree more with the General . Nigerians commiserate with them and wish the soldiers more success in their endeavour.
