The general superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William F. Kumuyi, has told auditors general of Nigeria that in the performance of their responsibilities, they must be guided by the fear of God and ensure that their conduct is exemplary in all things.
Kumuyi gave the charge yesterday at a 3-day conference for the auditors in Abuja.
Kumuyi says the auditors general are supposed to be the conscience of the nation, on public finance management matters. He said the auditors are expected and rightly too, to be the gatekeepers or watchdogs of the nation on public financial matters.
“This is a great and onerous responsibility that requires the holders of these offices to possess sterling qualities,” he said, adding that “relevant and most critical of these, is Integrity”.
Pastor Kumuyi told the participants that matchless benefits and blessings will abound in Nigeria if everyone acts and operates with the rare quality of integrity and truthfulness in all of their activities, noting that the damage caused by lack of integrity in the conduct of government businesses in particular, is seen everywhere.
“Auditors write reports which are to be relied upon by members of the public. It follows, therefore, that such reports must be truthful and honest; because integrity requires telling the truth, even if the truth is ugly. It is better to be honest than to delude others,” he remarked at the event.
He made the remarks in his paper presentation with the topic: “Integrity: an Indispensable Quality Required of the Nation’s Auditors-General” which took place at the NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja.
Chairman of the session and former chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Ekpo Nta said the auditors general are the integrity of the society. He urged them to come out of their offices and look at the files of government agencies to unearth corrupt acts. “The auditors general takes responsibility of every audited account of government. Therefore as auditors, you should be professional and operate with integrity,” he said.
