The Lagos State chapter of The All Progressives Congress (APC) flagged off its campaign yesterday for the 2019 general elections at the Skypower playing ground Ikeja.
But the well-attended programme was abruptly brought to an end when violence broke out between factions of the hoodlums suspected to be members of the National Union Road Transport Workers, NURTW.
The hoodlums, who invaded the programme midway, came with guns, daggers and other dangerous weapons, and engaged one another in bloody factional fight.
The development created panic at the campaign ground as party members ran helter-skelter in different directions to avoid being hit by bullets fired indiscriminately by the hoodlums.
Everything seems to be under control and going according to plan, until gunshot was fired at the podium where popular Fuji musicial, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, also known as ‘K1 De Ultimate’ was performing and thrilling party faithful who had thronged the venue.
According to sources who confided in LEADERSHIP, a skirmish, the cause of which was unknown, was said to have broken out between supporters of popular area father, MC Oluomo and members of other transport unions, leading to the display of supremacy among the hoodlums.
MC Oluomo was said to have been stabbed in the skirmish that occurred at the campaign ground and rushed to the hospital.
Security operatives deployed to the venue to keep watch had a hectic time controlling the situation.
Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode had to be guarded out of the venue alongside with his deputy, Mrs Idiat Adebule, the APC governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, who could not address the campaign, and other prominent members of the party.
Several people, including two journalists, whose identities could not be verified as at the time of filling in this report, who were hit by stray bullets, sustained varying degrees of were injured in the violence, even as it could not be confirmed if there was any loss of life in the fracas.
Despite the violence which attended its campaign flag-off, Governor Akinwunmi, in his speech urged Lagos voters to vote massively for all the candidates of the party to ensure continuity of good governance.
