A suspected cultist, Wasiu Adebowale Ademola, 34, of Sango area, Ilorin, who was allegedly arrested for being in possession of a gun, has been charged before an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court.
The accused was arraigned on a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearm and belonging to a secret cult, contrary to Sections 3(1) of Armed Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap RII, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and 1 of Secret Society and Cult (Provision), Law of Kwara State.
The accused was said to have been arrested on December 3, 2018 by the Operation Harmony patrol team, while conducting Operation Stop And Search along Eiyenkorin road, Ilorin.
Police said that when the Mazda bus with registration number, LAGOS EC 651 KSF, driven by one Lateef Saka, was stopped and searched, a locally made pistol concealed in a small traveling bag belonging to the accused was recovered.
When the accused was questioned, he allegedly confessed that he was a member of Eiye Secret Cult Confraternity and that he possessed the recovered gun illegally.
The Police First Information Report (FIR) stated that investigation conducted by Federal-Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS), Ilorin revealed that the accused left Ilorin, Kwara State, heading to Ibadan, Oyo State with the recovered gun with the intention of committing heinous crime and that he belongs to a member of Eiye Secret Cult Confraternity.
The FIR added that the accused did not have license to bear such arm, which was recovered, from him.
The prosecutor, Nasir Yusuf, told the court that investigation into the matter was in progress.
He objected bail of the accused and urged the court to remand him in prison custody pending the outcome of investigation.
The presiding magistrate, Mr A M Ibrahim, who declined to take the plea of the accused, however, remanded him at the Federal Prison Yard, Oke-Kura, Ilorin pending the outcome of investigation.
