An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a spiritualist, Yusuf Awosoya, to three months’ imprisonment for deceitfully having carnal knowledge of an 18-year-old (name withheld) student of Kwara State University, Malete.

Prior to the conviction of Awosoya, the prosecutor, Adewumi Johnson, had prayed the court to try him summarily since he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The magistrate, Mrs Bilikis Baraje, granted the oral application of the prosecutor and convicted Awosoya of the offence of outrage of woman’s modesty, contrary to Section 268 of the Penal code Law.

The counsel to the convict, Mrs Jimoh, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that the accused had realised his mistakes and he was sober by admitting before the court that he was guilty of the crime.

She pleaded further that the court should consider the fact he did not allow it to go through rigorous trial.

In her ruling, Magistrate Baraje sentenced the accused to three months’ imprisonment without an option of fine.

The Police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the case was transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking Women and Children Protection Unit, Police Headquarters; Ilorin after the victim had reported the matter to the police station at Malete.

The victim had complained that Awosoya, of no fixed address in Malete, unlawfully had sexual intercourse with her along the bush path in the community.

The FIR further revealed that during discreet investigation conducted by the police, Awosoya deceitfully lured the victim into believing that he was administering spiritual assistance on her by obtaining her consent to have intercourse with her.
