To celebrate 2019 International Condom Day (ICD), AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is to distribute over 600, 000 free condoms across Abuja, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Anambra and Cross River States to promote prevention of STIs, HIV, unwanted pregnancies and create safer sex awareness.

Nigeria Advocacy and Marketing Manager of AHF, Steve Aborisade, during the exercise, yesterday, in Abuja tagged; “Safer is Fun” said the commemoration is usually observed on February 13th in conjunction with Valentine’s Day, but due to upcoming general elections, the grand finale of outreach activities across AHF states has been scheduled to hold on February 7, 2019.

Aborishade said AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), largest global AIDS organisation, currently provides medical care and/or services to over 1million clients in 43 countries worldwide in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, the Asia/Pacific Region and Eastern Europe.

Also speaking, Dr Kema Onu, AHF FCT state clinical coordinator, in his address, said this year’s theme is very close to the global issues that we have around condom usage in the country. “The issues of supply and usage of condoms seem to be short fall, and we want to use this opportunity to sensitise the entire populace that indeed the use of condom is not an alternative, it remains the most realistic way of preventing sexually transmitted infection.”

“We are using the opportunity of this year’s valentine day to share this information.”

Medical Director, AHF Nigeria, Dr Emmanuel Nwabueze, while speaking said; “In AHF, every year, we celebrate the International Condom Day all over the world.”

“AHF is trying to support the eradication of HIV through the prevention of using condom. We all know that condoms help in prevention of STI’s which HIV is part of. It also helps in prevention of pregnancies. So, with promotion of International Condom Day, we are helping the federal government of Nigeria to prevent HIV spread. Prevention, as they say, is better than cure.”

On if people will actually use the condom he said, “Apart from what we do, we also provide trainings on how to use the condoms, it’s not just having the condom that is the problem, having the condom and using it very well is part of what we are doing to mark the ICD”.
