The Sustainable Democracy Agenda (SUDA) has called on all senators elect irrespective of political parties to throw their weight behind the bid of Senator Ahmad Lawan representing Yobe North for the position of President of the 9th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
A statement signed by the convener of the group, Ibrahim Haruna Usman yesterday in Abuja said the call became important for the incoming Senate to be united and vibrant unlike the present Senate which remained disunited since the inauguration day over leadership tussle.
The statement said: “Our position on this is in line with the Senate rule because findings have shown that Senator Lawan is presently the most experienced of all the senators elected on the platform of the majority All Progressives Congress (APC) and he has remained one of the most productive lawmakers since the beginning of the present dispensation in 1999.
“Our decision to drum support for the senator also followed painstaking investigation on his personal pedigree and integrity, both characteristics presently in short supply in our polity. The distinguished senator is of highest academic qualification and has never been found wanting on the ground of fraud or breach of legislative processes.”
The group said Senator Lawan deserves to lead the next Senate after his exemplary performance as Leader of the present Senate, “As keen observers of the polity, we watched with admiration how the senator exhibited maturity in his dealings with Senate President Bukola Saraki while marshalling support for the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari by remaining loyal to the majority APC.
“We are therefore delighted to observe the composition of senators-elect that accompanied Senator Lawan to his formal declaration. The multi-party support currently enjoyed by Lawan is an indication that his leadership when it emerges, could bring about the much needed stability in the Senate, which will lead to realization of the overall ‘Next Level’ agenda of President Buhari.”
The group also urged Senator Lawan to reach out to all his colleagues including those aspiring for the same position because “National interest must be above all other considerations. Senator Lawan as the front runner in the race should close ranks with all other senators to ensure a smooth inaugural seating of the 9th Senate, which would be crucial to the overall achievement of the incoming Senate.”
Senator Lawan a fourth term senator and overall sixth term federal lawmaker is gunning for the presidency of the 9th Senate. He contested in 2015 but was edged by Senate President Bukola Saraki in what has been described a ‘coup’ against the resolution of the ruling APC.
