President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the bill making June 12 of every year a national public holiday and Democracy Day.

By this act, June 12 replaces May 29 as Democracy Day and national public holiday.

However, May 29 will remain the handing over date but not as a public holiday.

The senior special assistant to the president on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, disclosed this to State House correspondents yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja soon after the bill was assented to by Buhari.

FG Declares Tomorrow Public Holiday

Sequel to the enactment of the June 12 Bill into law as Democracy Day, the federal government has declared tomorrow as public holiday to commemorate the maiden National Democracy Day.

Announcing the holiday, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Barr. Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah, congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad for the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country.

She called on Nigerians to continue to cherish the sacrifices made by heroes of democracy, particularly, those who lost their lives in the struggle for the actualisation of democratic governance in Nigeria in order to make the country a better place for all.

Ehuriah further called for the collaboration and cooperation of Nigerians with the administration of Buhari towards achieving “our collective aspiration for the unity, peace and socio-economic development of Nigeria.”

She wished Nigerians at home and abroad a happy Democracy Day celebration.
