The Galadima of Muri Alhaji Abba Tukur has advocated for presentation of at least secondary school certificate from every girl who is to be give out in marriage before the marriage exercise.
Tuktur stated this at his palace in Jalingo Taraba state capital when he played host to 100 youths under Taraba state Basic Education Board who are in collaboration with United Nation’s Children Fund UNICEF, the visit to the Palace was to kick start activities on three day sensitization on self quality education in the state.
He said the government should make a law across the country to stop early girl child marriage without education.
The Chief noted that when enacted, such a law would help in no small measure in tackling child marriage which is inimical to the women’s health in the country.
According to him, it would be possible if government at all levels make primary and secondary education free and compulsory for all Nigerian children.
“Government should endeavor to declare primary and secondary education in the country free and compulsory especially for the girl child,” he said.
Tukur called for serious penalty for teachers and university lecturers who harass female students sexually so that it would encourage the parents to send their girl children to school.
“It is only when parents are given the confidence that their female children are in safe hands while in schools that they would willingly enroll them in schools,” he noted.
Earlier, Mrs Kerkebe Ibrahim, the team leader told the chief that they were in his palace to seek his support for a safe and quality education for all children in the especially the girl child.
Ibrahim explained that 100 youths in the state had undergone training for three days on safe and quality education to help in carrying out advocacy to ensure success.
