NGOs Fete Elderly On World Elders’ Day

In a bid to curb the growing trend of neglecting the elderly in our society, two non-governmental organisations, NGOs, Concerned for Elders Initiative, (CEI), and Living Well Heritage Foundation, (LWHF) marked World Elder’s Day with people from 60 years and above, through programmes and events that care for their well-being.

To mark this year’s event, the CEI went to Ijanikin, a suburb of Lagos to mark the event with the elders in the neighbourhood.

Speaking at the event, CEI President, Mr. Matthew Oruga, appreciated God for the opportunity to associate with the elderly in the society, adding that the level of neglect of the elderly is high in the Nigerian society both in households and at the government level.

Lamenting that government policy on intervening in and alleviating the myriads of challenges faced by elderly is almost non-existent, Oruga sought support from government to establish a protective agencies for the elders, which should be charged with the responsibilities of looking at the elders in all tiers of government.

In a related development, the convener of LWHF, Queen Esther Aderomi Ashafa, said the aim of the foundation is to help the aged to live well as they grow older, through overcoming the moral, mental, physical, medical and spiritual challenges, posed by technology and changing norms and values in the society.

She said that her outfit aims to provide amenities and programmes which will help them age gracefully and enable them enjoy longevity as God provides.

Also speaking at the event, His Royal Highness, the Onijanikin of Ijanikin, Dr. Momodu Ashafa, enjoined the youth to take care of their elders at old age, challenging the youth to focus on taking care of their aged parents, instead of taking delight in parties and merriments.

The elderly at the event were provided with medical check-up, toiletries and other gift items.

Mr. Akanji Rafiu, a participant, thanked the organisers for remembering the elderly and pray for them.
