RMRDC Develops New Meat Handling Technology

The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has unveiled a new technology to enhance hygienic handling and processing of meat in the country.

Speaking during a book launch titled: “Opportunities and challenges in traditional African meat products development” director-general of RMRDC, Prof. Hussaini Ibrahim, co-author of the book, said the council in collaboration with the University of Benin developed a ‘kilishi’ processing technology.

He said the book provides guidelines on how to produce quality meat for consumption for major stakeholders in the meat industry.

Ibrahim represented by the director, Agro and Agro Allied Department, RMRDC, Dr. Gabriel Awolehin said the book aimed to tackle the challenges of meat processing in the African traditional way to meet international standard.

Other co-authors of the book are Professor of Food Science and Technology, Research and Innovation, John Igene; and the council’s director, Industrial Chemicals and Minerals Department, Dr. Mohammed Buga,

Earlier, the chief launcher and president of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Engr. Mansur Ahmed said the technology to enhance meat production was an opportunity to enhance the manufacturing industry and the research and development sector, adding that for development to take place, there must be a lot of investment in research and development.
