Centre Tasks FG, States On Eradication Of Almajiri System

The CEO of Salamander Trust Foundation (Centre for eradication of poverty and child destitution), Yusuf Abdurrasheed Usman, has called upon the states and federal governments to set a time budget for the final eradication of the Almajiri begging and carrying of plates in tattered clothes all over the Northern Nigeria.
Usman held that the Almajari system is a gun powder waiting to explode at any time if a compassionate response is not found to put an end to it, while also faulting the deportation of these children to their states of origin currently embarked upon by the 19 state governors of the Northern Nigeria, saying it is a fire brigade approach and will not solve the problem.
In a chat with LEADERSHIP, the CEO of Salamander Trust Foundation said: “The outbreak of COVID-19 has necessitated both the states and federal governments of Nigeria to take proactive measure for the containment of the spread of the disease, one of which is the deportation of Almajirai to their respective states of origin; an action which I see as very rash and one without a social content, highly inhuman and a violation of their human rights as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution section 41 (1) which states that, “Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereby or exit therefrom.”
Usman said it is even possible that the parents of those children are not from the states to which they are being forcefully moved without any proper records and adequate data.
Seeing the Almajiri system as a modern day slavery, Usman recommended that rather than deporting the children, they should be allowed to stay in their states of residents, and the various tiers of governments should indeed reform the system by either giving it equal attention as given the secular education or upgraded to a system of education where the children are given both western and Islamic education fully sponsored by the government.
