The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially flagged off the e-Naira wallet policy in Plateau state and encouraged Nigerians to key into the policy which makes business transactions faster, cheaper and seamless.
The apex bank also said Nigeria has adopted a digital economy therefore, e-Naira is instant and stable which can go a long way in boosting the economy and eliminating corruption.
The branch controller, Central Bank of Nigeria Jos, Tinat Esther Catherine who was speaking in University of Jos, yesterday, acknowledged that the e-Naira policy is real, after it has gone through so many series of testing.
Catherine traced the policy which was launched in Nigeria in October, 2021 and said Nigeria is the first African country to implement the policy while Jos is the third state in the Federation to be enrolled after Port Harcourt and Lagos.
She said they are bringing the policy to the door steps of Nigerians because the economy of the world is transforming and the Central Bank of Nigeria would not be left behind.
“This will be done through the distribution of larger technology which would make transactions very easy. We can use the merchant or individual.
“We want to promote e-Naira in the tertiary institutions across the nation.
The purpose of coming to the University of Jos is to captured the students so that they will take it round because we want school fees to be paid through e-Naira.
“ We are bringing it to the University so that with the permission of the vice chancellor parents can start using the e-Naira to pay children school fees, transfer or purchase items for their children.
“ University of Jos is the 10th Tertiary institution we are visiting and I am sure this relationship is going to be mutually beneficial to everybody”, she stated.
The Jos CBN branch controller also opined that they were engaging various stakeholders, noting that “things have advanced and going forward you would find out salaries are begin to be paid using the e-Naira.”
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor UNIJOS, Professor Tanko Ishaya, has tasked CBN towards strengthening infrastructure capacity to enable people key into the e-Naira policy.
The VC said the Institution is ready to accept e-Naira concept as he urged the apex Bank to be wary of those individuals that will take advantage of the policy to exploit the masses.
