Lagos State governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, ordered the dissolution of the State Executive Council (SEC), including all other political aides to hand over with effect from Friday, May 26, 2023.
The governor in a circular number 046 titled: “End of Political Office Holders-Cabinet/Non-Cabinet Ranks,” released by State’s Head of Service (HoS), Hakeem Muri-Okunola, urged all political appointees in the state to declare their assets while handing over the affairs of their offices latest by Friday, May 26.

According to him, the declaration of assets was in compliance with the provision of paragraph 11 (1b), part one of the fifth schedule of Nigerian Constitution on end of tenure assets declaration.

He added that the affected officers are Commissioners, Special Advisers (cabinet and non-cabinet), all assistants (Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, Personal Assistants, Personal Assistants, Technical Assistants, Personal aides etc).

The governor also instructed the officers to prepare individual handover notes and return any government property including utility/project vehicles in their possessions to the accounting officer/most senior director of their respective ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

“However, political appointees whose appointments are by legislation/tenure-based and members of statutory commissions/Governing Councils that their tenure have not lapsed, are not affected by the directive, unless otherwise formally informed,” the circular noted.

In the same vein, Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has sacked all political appointees in the state, and dissolved the State Executive Council.

The governor also terminated the appointments of political office holders, urging them to hand over government properties in their custody.

The dissolution takes immediate effect.

The dissolution, however, exempted all political officeholders in statutory commissions.

Makinde gave the directive in a letter dated May 23, 2023 and signed by his Chief of Staff, who also doubles as the Chairman, Transition & Inauguration Committee, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi.

The statement reads: “I have the directive of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde to inform you of the dissolution of the Oyo State Executive Council and the termination of the appointment of all political officeholders with effect from today. Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

“All political officeholders are required to officially hand over and submit all government properties in their possession to the most senior civil servant in their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

“Please note that political officeholders in statutory commissions are excluded from this directive.

“His Excellency appreciates your tremendous contributions to the development of our dear State and wishes you success in your future endeavours. I thank you.”
