In a move to enhance healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), has officially handed over a fully equipped state-of-the-art hospital building to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The facility, boasting a capacity of over 200 beds, was commissioned on Wednesday by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.

As part of the commissioning ceremony, the SSAP-SDGs also inaugurated a newly rehabilitated sports and recreational center within LASUTH, as well as an 80-bed multipurpose hospital in Mushin, designed to cater for the needs of the densely populated community in Lagos State.

During the commissioning event at LASUTH, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his optimism about the partnership between the Federal and State Governments in delivering modern medical infrastructure.

He believed that this collaboration would not only bolster the healthcare system in Lagos State but also elevate LASUTH’s status as a leading center of excellence for healthcare services.

The governor remarked, “I have no doubt that with this facility and several others established across the country, we are making significant strides toward improving our nation’s human capital development index and achieving the targets set under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

In her address, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Princess Adejoke Orolope-Adefulire, emphasised that quality healthcare should be a right accessible to all, rather than a privilege limited to a few.

She highlighted the importance of the SDGs in ensuring that no one is left behind, stating, “This building is a tangible embodiment of our commitment to this principle. With its added capacity, more citizens will gain access to essential healthcare services necessary for healthy and productive lives.”

Princess Adejoke Orolope-Adefulire stressed that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right and a top priority for the Nigerian government, as it aims to leave no one behind.

She reiterated that the newly constructed 200-bed multipurpose building represents the realization of this vision, achieved through dedication, strategic planning, and effective collaboration.

The facility stands as a beacon of hope, promising quality healthcare for all residents of Lagos and Nigerians in general.

Additionally, Professor Akin Abayomi, the State Commissioner for Health, highlighted the significance of the medical facility in improving the health indices of Lagos State.

He explained that the 200-bed SDG multipurpose medical building, donated by the OSSAP-SDGs, is a two-story L-shaped structure with a waiting shed.

This building aims to address the shortage of beds at LASUTH and facilitate the expansion and enhancement of healthcare delivery.
