Avoiding Road Accidents And Confusion In Imo State

For two years running after the break in at the Owerri Correctional Centre in Imo State, part of the Okigwe road has remained blocked, causing drivers, commuters, and other road users discomfort.

The Douglas House roundabout is considered the busiest in the state as it houses eight major roads.

However, for supposed security reasons, the road which passes the front of the Owerri Correctional Centre has remained closed even with the influx of people and vehicular traffic.

For well over a year, the traffic lights at the roundabout are set on amber, get ready and road users from eight busy lanes simply drive on simultaneously, sometimes they collide in accidents, many times they are lucky just by a whisker.

For many others, they are patients of different orthopaedic centres seeking treatment for injuries sustained during accident at the spot.

The nightmare begins from Mbari junction axis of the Okigwe road while security operatives deployed to ensure order, prefer to lay ambush for unlucky drivers who fall victim for ready cash.

It is embarrassing that a major roundabout leading to the seat of government operates as though lawless when drivers drive into different routes simultaneously albeit uncoordinated.

There’s an urgent need to allow for proper use of the roads guided by traffic lights, these days not all drivers are excellent, many simply drive because they can move a car.

Government must not waste huge state resources invested in traffic lights for safety and continuous condoning off the roads, because lack of use contributes to depreciation.

While security is continually improved at the Owerri Correctional Centre and across the state, it is important to safeguard lives and properties of people using the axis.
