Vice chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo in Ebonyi State, Prof Sunday Elom, has banned all forms of indecent dressing among students and staff within the university community.

Elom also ordered the compulsory wearing of faculty and departmental uniforms by all students during school hours.

In a statement signed by the school registrar, Mr. Ifeanyi Igwe, the management expressed displeasure over the ugly trend of students’ behaviour on campus which he said has led to deteriorating discipline and disorderliness in the university.

Prof Elom directed the immediate ban on indecent dressing on campus which includes wearing of transparent dresses, dirty jeans with holes, or obscene subliminal messages, tattered clothes, baggy and saggy clothing and tightfitting apparels.

The school also banned shirts, tops and caps with obscene write-ups that suggest membership of secret cults, shirts, tops and caps with obscene write-ups bearing obnoxious/seductive inscription, piercing of body and tattooing, wearing of necklaces and nose ring by students and artificial dreadlock hair make or coloured artificial hair.

The vice chancellor announced a fine of N10,000 per offence or outright expulsion of any student caught contravening any of the policies, adding that any staff who contravenes the policy or acting in contrary to the policy will be referred to the university Staff Disciplinary Committee.

The vice chancellor attributed the increasing rate of insecurity on the campus to activities of some members of the host communities who are still living within the school environment.

Elom said the university also faces other forms of security challenges emanating from activities of commercial tricycle and motorcycle riders and other faceless groups on the campus.

He expressed the concern that there is high level of phone snatching, burglary and other criminal activities in the school perpetrated by some persons residing within and outside the school environment.

He called for collaboration between the Ikwo local government area and the school management to curb the ugly trend.
