The members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, have embarked on an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their 13 months’ salary.

The lecturers in a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting signed by the union’s chairman and secretary, Arikawe Ade, and Fapetu Damilola, respectively said they would not participate in the first semester examinations of the polytechnic slated for Tuesday, June 13, unless the state government did the needful.

They said, “We want the payment in full of all outstanding (13 months) salary arrears owed to the staff of the institution.

“The congress wishes to strongly emphasise that the decision above is binding on all the financial members of the union.”

The aggrieved lecturers urged the Ondo State government to assist the institution’s authorities to clear the salary arrears like the state and local government workers who are not being owed salaries.

Some students of the institution who spoke at separate interviews have lamented that the strike will have a negative impact on them, since they will not be allowed to do their first semester examinations which were earlier slated for Tuesday next week.
