The Kebbi State government yesterday assured of its support to expand the initiative of planting trees introduced by the National Agency for Great Green Wall to the 21 local government areas in order to tackle desertification in the state.
The deputy governor, Umar Abubakar Tafidan Kabi, gave the assurance when he received the director general of the agency, Yusuf Maina Bukar, in his office in Birnin Kebbi.
The deputy governor who symbolically planted a tree in the cabinet office in Birnin Kebbi using a groaxis water box, a new technique for plantation, said the plantation was to mark this year’s World Great Green Wall Day in the state.
The director general who was represented by the director, rural development and extension services, Ahmed Majidadi Bagudo, had informed the deputy governor that the new system was invented due to shortage of rainfall in some countries across the world including Nigeria.
Bagudo added that the introduction of groaxis water box can make the plant to grow faster and could be up to six months without watering and cannot dry.
