Sweatshirts and head caps sales is a lucrative venture in Nigeria, especially, during this rainy season. This is because during the season, people often need to cover up because of cold that comes with the rain.

This type of clothing, which can be worn over shirts, has gained popularity over the years. Because of its versatility, it can be worn in casual or formal settings in any season, but it is most popular during the cooler months.

As a profitable business, one can start with very little capital and yield high returns. During the rainy season, people find cardigans very handy. Babies wear them to stay warm. Schools use them as part of their uniforms, and people travelling outside the country on vacation or for other reasons need this product to stay warm and healthy. So, the market is large for anyone who wants to go into production.

A resident of Anifowoshe, Ikeja, Blessing Adamu, claimed a sweatshirt has become part of her essential clothing, especially, during the cold weather. “I do not joke with it, especially when I am traveling to a place I have never been to before. The one I am using currently, I bought at N4,500, and it is still serving its purpose.”

A anonymous clothing store owner in Abule-Egba area of Lagos said: “For me, selling sweaters is the best option now as their prices are going up due to demand. All I have to do is get the stack from the market in bales and start selling.

Rebecca Ajayi, who is into knitting cardigans, believes there is a huge market for cloth in the country. She urged anyone who wants to go into cardigan production to invest in a knitting machine, yarn, which is the material used, needles, and training.

“You have to enrol in a knitting school, and this is where you will be taught how to make sweatshirts, different designs, and all other things, and the training could take up to six months to a year,” she says.

Profitability

Ajayi affirmed that the business is profitable, saying, the business will be profitable if there are customers who find value in it.

Pricing

How you fix the price of the product depends on the amount you buy from the market, irrespective of the design or pattern. But usually, the average price for an adult sweater is about N8,000 for a unit, and imagine you selling 10 units a day, which translates to N80,000.
