In an effort to combat voter apathy and promote informed participation in the last general elections in Nigeria, The Citizen Project, led by Blossom Egbude under the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) Youth Leadership Program,  conducted a comprehensive voter education campaign across all six geo-political zones in the country.
The initiative, titled “The Citizen,” was launched in 2022 with the aim of fostering democratic engagement and voter awareness, particularly among young voters.
To bridge the gap in civic education and make electoral processes accessible to all Nigerians, The Citizen Project organized six radio shows in major cities – Enugu, Lagos, Abuja, Calabar, Kaduna, and Maiduguri – representing diverse regions of Nigeria. The radio shows were broadcasted in four languages: Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and English.
Throughout the radio shows, civic space activists and experts from both private and public sectors, such as Olubunmi Ayantunji, a legislative aide with the Nigerian Senate; Collins Nebo, a former Technical Adviser to the Enugu State Governor; and Ms. Foluke Ademokun of the Association of Nigerian Women Business Network, were featured to provide valuable insights. Listeners also had the opportunity to call-in and actively participate in the discussions.
The initiative, which engaged five youth leaders from different countries, including Blossom Egbude representing Nigeria, aimed to promote nation-building and enhance understanding of the electoral processes, especially among residents in rural communities. Over the course of six months, The Citizen Project reached over 2 million Nigerians with crucial information about the electoral process, voter rights, and responsibilities, fostering an environment of civic consciousness.
CIPE Youth Leader for Nigeria, Blossom Egbude emphasised the importance of educating electorates on their rights and responsibilities, especially in rural communities where digital inclusion is limited.
Recognizing that a significant portion of the population is not online, the project focused on grassroots sensitization to ensure all citizens were well-informed about political participation.
CIPE, affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is one of the core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy. It collaborates with local business leaders to promote inclusive growth through market-led solutions. CIPE’s programs prioritize democratic governance, entrepreneurship, open trade, and anti-corruption efforts. Working with its global partner network, CIPE develops practical tools and knowledge to drive positive change at the local level.
