The StayAlert Humanright Awareness Initiative has denounced demands for the resignation of Senate President Goodwill Akpabio, labeling them a mere distraction.

The group has instead expressed unwavering support for Akpabio and the 10th National Assembly, commending them for their introduction of legislation focused on the welfare of the people.

During a press conference held in Abuja yesterday, the executive director of the organisation, Ambassador Hilary A. Onah, extolled the Senate for their dedication, particularly in expeditiously completing ministerial screening and preventing an increase in electricity tariffs.

“We also commend them for their dedication and tireless efforts, demonstrated by sessions held on Thursday, Friday, and even Saturday, solely to conclude the crucial task of screening ministerial nominees,” stated Onah.

Onah further emphasized, “It is imperative for all Nigerians to recognize the commendable work executed by the senators.”

The group advocated for an environment that allows senators to effectively fulfill their duties, instead of subjecting them to baseless and self-serving criticism that merely disrupts their legislative obligations and detracts from the fruits of their labor.

“We wholeheartedly denounce the call for the resignation of Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio due to his lighthearted comment about senators receiving funds for their recess,” Onah declared.

According to Onah, Akpabio’s character as an affable and benevolent politician, whose contributions have positively impacted numerous Nigerians, should not be discounted.

He affirmed that Akpabio’s statement on the Senate floor should not be misconstrued, as providing allowances has been a longstanding practice in the National Assembly.

“On the matter of allocating funds to senators, it is a commonplace procedure since senators are entitled to remuneration and benefits, akin to civil servants who receive allowances and imprest,” Onah asserted.

Onah concluded by highlighting the necessity of comprehending the functioning of the civil service. “Many Nigerians lack the understanding of how the civil service operates. Senators, like civil servants, receive salaries and their rightful dues,” he clarified.
