Journalists Against Trafficking in Persons (JATP), Delta State chapter, has called for the need for all to speak up against trafficking in persons.

The state coordinator, Comrade Anthonia Mowah, stated this while featuring on a Delta TV programme, ‘Morning Ride’ to sensitise people on the signs and dangers of trafficking in persons and ways to combat the menace.

Speaking on the DEVATOP Centre for Africa’s Development project ‘TALKAM Against Trafficking in Persons,’ she pointed out the need to eradicate human trafficking, describing it as the greatest violation of human rights.

While calling on all to strengthen resilience against exploitation and underlying socioeconomic and cultural issues that create the enabling environment for trafficking to thrive, she urged stakeholders to keep pushing those who can make a difference in terms of changing policies to strengthen preventive measures, improve identification of victims and increase support of survivors and end impunity to the dehumanising vices.

Explaining this year’s theme, “Reach Every Victim of Trafficking: Leave No One Behind,” she highlighted the power of internships and collaboration in strengthening anti-trafficking efforts as the traffickers continue to target women and girls where majority of them are used for sexual exploitation and forced labour.

The coordinator reiterated that to defeat the bedeviling menace, sensitisation and advocacy were key as the DEVATOP Centre for Africa’s Development is partnering with journalists across the country including Delta, Enugu and Sokoto states to achieve the feat.

It would be recalled that the World Day Against Human Trafficking was celebrated on July 30, 2023, to raise awareness, encourage vigilance and gain support for prevention of human trafficking.
