Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters yesterday dismissed reports calling for a military coup d’etat in the country.
Acting director of defence information Brig-Gen Tukur Gusau said the military remained better under democracy.
Gusau said in a statement while reacting to reports calling on the military to interfere in the nation’s democracy that it was highly unpatriotic, wicked and an attempt to distract the armed forces from performing it’s constitutional responsibilities.
He said while the leadership of the armed forces gives priority to the welfare of its personnel, it however, detests any attempt by any individual or group to instigate it to embark on any unconstitutional change of government in the country.
“We wish to state unequivocally that the military is happy and better under democracy and will not get involved in any act to sabotage the hard-earned democracy in our country,” he said.
He reiterated that the armed forces under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, was determined to ensure complete subordination to constitutional authority.
He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to be distracted from his roles that are well defined in the 1999 constitution (as amended).
