As part of measures to mitigate the hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government, the Gombe State government yesterday announced the payment of a monthly palliative of N10,000 to each civil servant in the state.

State deputy governor, Manasseh Jatau, made the announcement while addressing journalists in his office on behalf of the state governor.

He said that the removal of the fuel subsidy came at a time when the global economy is passing through some recession, adding that the two developments led to serious economic hardship on the people.

According to him, to ameliorate the sufferings of the people, especially the downtrodden, the state government distributed palliatives in form of foodstuff to the less privileged households across the 2,988 polling units in the state.

Jatau stated that they decided to also assist civil servants in view of the fact that “they are the engine room of the administration and are the implementers of government policies.

“We have also noted with sympathy the difficulties they are passing through as a result of the economic meltdown and therefore decided to bring interventions by way of payment of N10,000 each on monthly basis effective from the month of August, 2023.

“This shall include all workers in the state and local government payrolls. However, all local government councils are mandated to key into the GOHEALTH programme by ensuring the enrollment of their staff in order to ease their health problems as a way of mitigating the hardship emanating from the current economic realities,” he noted.
