The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a total of 46 grid collapses in the country spanning the period from 2017 to 2022.

In a Twitter post shared yesterday, the company emphasised that over the years within this timeframe, there has been a noteworthy reduction in the occurrence of grid collapses across the nation.

Recall that the transmission company earlier announced that the country has not witnessed any grid collapse for 400 days.

Based on the data at hand, it is evident that there were a series of grid collapses over the past six years. In 2017, there were a total of 15 grid collapses, followed by 12 grid collapses in 2018.

The trend continued in 2019, with 9 grid collapses recorded. In 2020, the number decreased to 4 grid collapses, and in 2021, there were only 2 grid collapses.

However, in 2022, the figure rose again to 4 grid collapses.

In a statement earlier, the TCN had announced that the Nigerian power grid has operated without disruptions or systems collapse for 400 consecutive days, amounting 13.3-month straight stability.

TCN’s general manager, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, announced the milestone achievement in a statement last week.

The company said the milestone signified a remarkable advancement in the nation’s efforts at strengthening its power infrastructure and ensuring a reliable electricity supply to distribution load centres for onward distribution to electricity customers nationwide.

It said the sustained stability and reliability of the Nigerian power grid could be attributed to a combination of strategic measures and investments in the power system by the Management of the TCN.

The GM listed some of the key elements that have contributed to the remarkable accomplishment, including Configuration and Enforcement of Free Governor Control, effective Under-frequency Relay Scheme, among others.

She said that, “TCN constituted a three-person committee that was formed to go round the country for the configuration and activation of Primary Reserve in coordination with power stations and in line with the provisions in the Grid code.
