Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke, has dismissed insinuations that the visit of leaders of Rivers State to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was intended towards collapsing the structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nwuke, who disclosed this in an interview with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the visit, which involved traditional rulers and religious leaders couldn’t have been for political reasons.
He said: “I think what they had was close door meeting, yes. Rivers leaders visited the President and there were strong reasons why they went to see the President.
“They complained about the Eleme axis of the East-West Road. It has been very terrible. Even if you remove the refinery, there are Ogoni speaking communities that need that road to get to their homes. If you need to got to Akwa Ibom; even Okrika people, especially those from Ogu/Bolo need to go home.
The governor has spoken to members of the House of Representatives and the Senate about the situation of the road.
“So, the visit to the President is understandable. Rivers people who have been given appointments by the Tinubu administration. What they went to do was to say ‘Thank You.’
“You don’t go to change party and you go with traditional rulers, who are apolitical. You don’t go there with elders, except those who are politicians. For me, I will say we should not be in a hurry to arrive at such conclusions.”
