The senator representing Yobe East senatorial district, Senator Ibrahim Geidam was appointed as the minister of police affairs by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu in August, 2023, thereby creating vacancy in the position.

The leader of the Coalition of Concern Groups for the former IGP, Muhammad Baba Ismail, while addressing newsmen in Damaturu said their mission is to formally seek for him to contest for the vacant position based on his track record of selfless service throughout his public service career.
