Zamfara State government has embarked on mass mobilisation and screening of sickle cell disease in the rural areas to ensure equitable health services to the people of the state.
The commissioner for women, children and social development, Hajiya Nafisa Muhammad, who spoke on behalf of the governor’s wife, Hajiya Huriya Dauda Lawal, said the free sickle cell disease screening exercise was aimed at tackling the disease in the state.
She said the major challenge facing sickle cell patients was constant medication, stressing that the administration of Governor Lawal was ever ready to assist them.
The commissioner further stressed that supporting individuals and families affected by the genetic blood disorder requires a collective effort of all and sundry.
She, therefore, appealed to non- governmental organisations and philanthropists in the state to complement the state government’s effort in the area of healthcare delivery.
In his speech, the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr Habibu Yalwa, said patients with sickle cell diseases in the rural communities would be reached for the screening exercise.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke during the campaign thanked the state government for the continued care and support being offered to them.
