A non-profit organisation dedicated to equipping young individuals with leadership skills, the Junior Chambers International (JCI), is set to join forces with the federal and state governments to halt brain drain and irregular migration in the country.

During the organisation’s 2023 national convention held in Abuja with the theme “Skills, Engagement, and Development: Fostering Youth Participation for National Growth,” the Nigeria president-elect of JCI, Ms. Sandra Ekene Efemuaye, expressed deep concern over the adverse impact of brain drain and irregular migration across various sectors of the country.

Efemuaye disclosed that JCI has outlined a comprehensive plan for 2024, aiming to engage with the Nigerian government at all levels and encourage those who have relocated abroad to return to Nigeria, bringing back their valuable skills and knowledge to contribute to the nation’s development.

According to her, the initiative became imperative to help the government in one or two areas, particularly in the areas of boosting the economy of the country.

“The ‘Japa syndrome’ has detrimentally affected various sectors of our economy,” Efemuaye remarked.

“However, in 2024, JCI is committed to empowering our youth to view Nigeria as their foremost destination. We cannot all depart. We are urging those who have left to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills and return home to help develop Nigeria,” she said.

She stressed that the initiative has become essential to assist the government in addressing economic challenges and highlighted the organisation’s intention to collaborate closely with government bodies, including the ministry of Youths and Sports, both at the state and federal levels.

“We will establish partnerships with these sectors to empower our youth with the diverse skills they need to thrive in the evolving world,” Efemuaye stated.

She said the organisation does not solely rely on the government for job creation, saying by empowering youth, they are confident that the nation will build a stronger Nigeria and improve the nation’s economy.
